Adjustable Gastric Banding

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, commonly known as "Lap Band," is another option in weight loss surgery. Europeans have used the Lap Band technique to lose weight for years and now more people in the United States are choosing this option.

In the Lap Band procedure, the surgeon places a synthetic band around the uppermost portion of your stomach. He then tightens the band to limit the amount of food entering into your stomach.

One of the largest benefits of the Lap Band is that it is completely adjustable from the comfort and convenience of your surgeon's office. This makes the Lap Band a very personalized treatment, allowing you to change your food intake needs to accomodate pregnancies and other health issues.

Another benefit is that the procedure does not change your stomach — the surgeon does not remove any portion of your stomach. The Lap Band is entirely removable at any time, restoring the anatomy of your stomach to its original form. This also means there are fewer risks for side effects including vitamin and mineral deficiencies and morbidity.
